Valley Homemakers meets regularly over the summer and occasionally the rest of the year. Meeting are usually held the fourth Thursday of the month. The group holds social events and does a variety of community service such as gathering personal items for residents of Duluth facilities and the spring cleaning at the Lake Chapel. A variety of fund raising events are held, such as an annual bake sale, and charitable contributions are made to such organizations as the Salvation Army and the local food shelf. It’s good way to socialize and meet your neighbors.

The Pequaywan Lake Garden Club meets monthly. Ray Barnes and Deb Pomroy have kept the organization continuing for a number of years. Ray and Deb, a botanist, often host the group and have a number of resources available for use by members.

A popular feature is the late summer tour of members’ gardens and yards. This living laboratory demonstrates which species flourish in this challenging climate. Members share seeds, roots, plants and ideas. Meeting times and locations are posted on www. Pequaywan.com.

Fire Department. We are fortunate to have a well staffed volunteer fire department in our area with three fire engines, located at the Fire Hall. There are 13 trained fire fighters and six members of a first-responder team, which has two defibrillators. Volunteers meet monthly.

The annual Pancake Breakfast is the major fund raiser for the department.

Residents who are planning large-scale burning of brush or other material should contact the department to inform it of the time and location.
