Gerald W. ‘Jerry’ Goad, 62, of Duluth, passed away Sunday, Dec. 2, 2007 at Solvay Hospice House after a brave battle with heart disease. Jerry was born on June 30, 1945 to William and Winnie (Nicholai) Goad in Michigan. He graduated from Central High School in 1964. Jerry worked at Cleveland Cliffs for a while. He joined the Marines for three years and was a decorated veteran for three times in the Vietnam War. After his service in the Marines he worked as a State Grain Inspector until his retirement in 1999. He was a very kind and patient man. Jerry enjoyed life in the country and at the lake. He spent most of his time outdoors with nature or working on his many projects in the garage. Most of all he loved to be with his family and many special friends. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his son, Darrin Goad; grandchild, Jared of Duluth; sister, Cheryl (Doug) Carlson; nephews, Ryan (Ashley) Tanner and Nathan of Duluth; Karen Romano and dog ‘Bear’, Julie (Chris) Nick, Tony Grillo, Frank (Missy) Romano Kaylie, Florence Kubiak, special friends, Kim and Jim McDonnell, Morgan, Hailey, Rick and Jackie Fry many relatives and friends. MEMORIAL SERVICE:11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 7, 2007 in Trinity Lutheran Church located at 1108 East 8th Street. Pastor Jerome Evavold officiating. Charles Edward Gronseth, 72, died Saturday, April 5, 2008 surrounded by his family at the hospice unit of St. Mary’s Medical Center. Chuck was born on Jan. 19, 1936 in Duluth. He graduated from Duluth Denfeld in 1954 and in 1955 married Betty Koenig, his wife of 52 years. He served as a member of the Air National Guard. He was a much respected and trusted owner/operator of Morgan Park Sales and Service until his disabling accident in 1971. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed camping, fishing, and hunting. He spent a great deal of time with his wife, family, and friends at their cabin/home on Pequaywan Lake as well as traveling to Canadian lakes in search of walleyes. He enjoyed warm southern winters with friends and family while exploring Arizona’s deserts and fishing the Gulf in Texas.
Chuck is preceded in death by his father, William and brother, Robert (Bob). He is survived by his mother, Loraine; his wife, Betty; five children; Scott (Mary), Gail (Charles) McCarty, Robert (Kim), Susan (Duane) Halverson, William (Deanna); 15 grandchildren and 1 great grandson; a niece and nephew, and many extended family members. CELEBRATION OF LIFE:3 p.m. Friday, April 11, in Sunrise Memorial Chapel in Hermantown. Friends and family wishing to share memories and tributes will have the opportunity to do so during the service. Carrie Ruby (Lunde) Ostrander, 94, lifelong resident of Duluth, passed peacefully into the arms of the Lord on April 7, 2008. She was born in Duluth on Nov. 7, 1913, to Nils and Berta Lunde. Carrie graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1932 and was a charter member of Kenwood Lutheran Church. She worked for Standard Oil, the Aftenro Home and the Duluth Superior Transit Co. Carrie was active in a variety of clubs and community affairs as a resident in Kenwood and Pequaywan Lake. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alex Ostrander; parents; brothers, Frank and Roy; infant grandson, Cale Leif Lunde; and infant great-grandson, Mason David Stokes.
Carrie is survived by her children, Jerry (Debbie) Ostrander of Florida, Marcia (Dale) Lunde and Karen (Jack Larson) Copt, both of Duluth; 15 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Ostrander and Dora Anderson; numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. A special thanks to St. Luke’s Hospital and Edgewood Vista for their care and compassion. She will be truly missed by family and friends from Kenwood where she and Alex raised their family and friends at Pequaywan Lake where she enjoyed 40+ years of retirement. MEMORIAL SERVICE:11 a.m. on Friday, April 11, 2008, in Kenwood Lutheran Church, 324 W. Cleveland St. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Richard D. ‘Dick’ Madden, 68, of Duluth, passed away on Wednesday April 16, 2008 surrounded by his family and friends after a courageous battle with Cancer at the Solvay Hospice House. He was born in Duluth on March 24, 1939 to Thomas and Virginia Madden. Dick had sailed on the Great Lakes retiring after 43 years of service with Interlake Steamship Company. He had been a member of the American legion and the VFW in West Duluth, as well as the Pequaywan Lake Association. Dick was a U.S. Navy veteran. The family would like to express a special thank you to the staff at the Solvay Hospice House for the compassionate care Dick received.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son. He is survived by his wife, Janice, sons, Gary (Brenda) and Rick (Jenn) both of Duluth; daughter, Cathy (Michael) Wilson of Duluth; brothers, Tom (Gina) Madden of Tucson, Ariz., Tim (Liane) Madden of Tampa, Fla., and Terry (Lorna) Madden of Superior, sisters, Geri (Chico) Shock of Phoenix, Ariz., Ginger Eckman of Superior, and Patty Kuehnow of Duluth; five grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and special friends, and his faithful companion Lulu, his dog. VISITATION:10 a.m. Saturday until the 11 a.m. Memorial Service in Hegstrom Family Funeral Home, Foley Chapel, 5405 Ramsey St. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Solvay Hospice House.

Warren J. Atol, 84, of Grand Ave. died Tuesday, April 29, 2008 at St. Mary's Medical Center surrounded by his family. Warren was born Aug. 4, 1923 in Duluth to Joseph and Nora (Kelm) Atol. He attended Duluth Cathedral High School. He then joined the family business, Arrowhead Fireworks and he was still active in the business until his death. He truly enjoyed working. He was a member of St. Michael's Church and was a life member of B.P.O. Elks. Warren enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, deer hunting and spending time at the cabin, but most of all, Warren loved his children and grandchildren. If it is true that 'the man who dies with the most toys wins' than Warren has won. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Nora. Warren is survived by his children, Patty Kripitz of Las Vegas and Tom (DeDee) Atol of Duluth; the mother of his children, Patricia Atol of Las Vegas; brother, Joseph Atol of Baton Rogue, LA; grandchildren, Stephanie, Amy, Kristine, David, Casey and Anna and great grandchildren, Marc, Justin, Jonathan, Alexandra, Elizabeth and Brooke. VISITATION:6 to 8 p.m. Friday with a Rosary at 6:30 p.m. in the Dougherty Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Michael's Church 4901 E Superior St. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.
